iPhone Overtakes Android in the US

There are now more active iPhone users than Android users in America

According to research by Counterpoint Research, the Financial Times reported that there are now more iPhone users than Android users in America for the first time.

“Operating systems are like religions — never significant changes, but over the past four years the flow has consistently been Android to iOS.”

Counterpoint’s research director, Jeff Fieldhack

Using data from Counterpoint Research, the Financial Times reported that iPhones now account for just slightly over 50% of actively used smartphones in America. Apple achieved this through the iPhone’s “active installed base”. The active installed base takes into account all users that bought used iPhones, users who use an iPhone that is older than a year, and Apple’s quarterly iPhone shipments. The active installed base of iPhones in America passed the 50% mark in June, while about 150 other phone brands using the Android operating system accounted for the rest.

Globally, 57% of the global premium smartphone market share belonged to Apple in June of 2022, with Samsung and other brands using Android making up the rest of the market. In a report from StockApps in April 2022, Android lost 8% of its market share globally while iOS gained 6%. Despite this, Android still holds more than 70% of the global smartphone market share as of 2022. Android phones appeared on the market a year after the iPhone debuted, overtaking the iOS-installed base two years later, and maintaining its dominance since.
